A beautiful chillout area in the backyard, a nice barbecue and a wonderfully cutted lawn: When a great amount of people is forced to stay at home during the pandemic, many of them are upgrading their homes in the meantime. Those fortunate to have a balcony, private or community garden - and also no opportunity to book a travel in these times - are happy to redecorate it and get the best escape oases outside!
In fact, garden furniture and other accessories, especially barbecues, are the top-sellers at the moment! The iF awarded products in the category Garden wonderfully sum up major garden trends and show how the importance of stay home gardens and gardening grew - long before corona.
This can also be seen in the growing amount of urban gardens and, where space in dense cities is limited, public spaces and buildings where garden spaces can be found on rooftops or on generous terraces. The best and most famous example is the Sky Garden London - see them all below!
In these days, it seems like everybody is having barbecues - a huge trend all around the world! Most people have them in their backyards or terraces. But what if you do not have the space in your urban flat? Do it old school with barbecue to go! iF gold award winner Carrefour from France developed the portable barbecue HYBA, designed for easy disassembly, transport or storage afterwards.
Reduced to just eight
parts, which can be assembled or dismantled in just 90 seconds. Clever: The cover protects the tank, is a plate for the grill, and can be used to
fan air on the embers.The iF Jury was impressed: "Thanks to its lightweight materials and compact design, it is easy to
assemble, dissemble, store and transport. This is a design in which form
truly follows function. Never has a portable barbeque lived up to its
promise so fully."
GOLDEN JADE CONSTRUCTION & DEVELOPMENT CORP is a freshman in the iF DESIGN AWARD! In 2020, they have been honored for their project Sky Green in the heart of Taichung, Taiwan. In a location with some drawbacks;
heavy traffic, dense population, a mix of old and new buildings, poor
air quality, and a lack of green spaces, this building
features a green structure as the main facade with 260% high green
This kind of pleasant, natural environment in an urban context is no new idea! Greener buildings are evrywhere, as some winners of the iF DESIGN AWARD 2020 show, like the HiddenSpace Shoppingcenter, the Ginza Sony Park (iF gold winner) or the GreenLand HongKon Yuehu Academy. See some more examples in our winner collections on Architecture or Interior Architecture.
However, it is also a megatrend, as citties are getting more and more densed and living space scarce, to conquer the gardens in the sky. The best example is the most famous on - The Sky Garden London.
