Turkey has an impressive creative community - it is long overdue, to pay them tribute! Together with two journalists in Turkey, Safak Ünal and Sibel Baykam, iF launches the first book about the Turkish creative scene - "Creative Turkey". The cover of the coffee table book was designed exclusively by famous Turkish artist, actor and writer Bedri
at iF have sent it to 1,000 representatives of the international media and journalists
as well as to 2,000 designers and design teams", says iF CEO Ralph Wiegmann.
As an exciting country with many influences, from Asia and Europe, and a long tradition of craftmanship, it is no wonder, the meaning of design is growing in Turkey. And often, such developments were traditionally or politically driven: One example is the significant growth of interior designers. This is mainly due to the building boom in Turkey that roughly started in the late 1990s. This is also when the governmental support for well-crafted and designed products began to grow:
The historical development of Turkey's design scene is probably incomparable to other countries and is also dealt with in the book. As well as the governmental support for design and design education itself.
The goal was now and then, to sell more competitive, well designed, unique products. The right name for it might be export driven design - especiall for kitchen equipment (see below)!
The iF WORLD DESIGN INDEX (WDI) is a benchmarking and evaluation system, divided into categories such as industries, as well as by country or continent. The index is compiled from iF award winners of the past five years and represents the world's most successful in-house design teams, the most reputed design studios and the top design-driven companies.
In the edition Creative Turkey, many current and high profile designers and design studios present themselves, among them Arcelik, Serhan Gürkan, Esra Asikoglu, Jale Kulin or Teget Architecture - to name a few. They show the span of creativity, that the country has to offer.
Readers of "Creative Turkey" get a very personal look into the work and the people behind Turkey's thriving design scene.
