What iF Virtual Reality could help you prepare for dangerous situations? The winners

Virtual reality is no loan word anymore. Since VR gaming or also virtual showrooms gained in popularity, the possibilities of VR have grown, too. However, VR is not only popular for entertainment - it can also be a useful tool in the everyday lives of people, especially in difficult or stressful situations. It’s no surprise: the more someone goes through a situation, the more prepared and rational the reactions will be. That’s the reason why e.g. pilots exercise in a flight simulator before finally taking it to the air – routine reactions to emergency situations are best acquired in a danger-free environment.

For the topic "what if virtual reality could help you prepare for dangerous situations" of the first round of the iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD 2019 we asked for concepts of VR simulation for a potentially dangerous or stressful situation. They should allow people to train their emergency reactions in virtual reality. The prize money winner concepts include such innovations as a VR card game to teach children the dangers of fire or a helmet for welders with real-time visual guidance.

FLIR Vision | Welding helmet

FLIR Vision is a new welding helmet concept that offers welders visual assistance and guidance to achieve the best possible weld quality. By measuring the heat of the welding and the heat distribution combined with weld procedure data, FLIR Vision provides real-time visual guidance on how to achieve an optimal weld. Through mixed reality and thermal imaging solutions, FLIR Vision functions as a new tool to enable precise welds that meet the high industry standards. Costs for documentation, inspections, weld mistakes, repairs, and even accidents can now be avoided by providing enhanced vision and correct weld parameter functionality.


I am greatly honored for the recognition of FLIR Vision. I would like to give a special thanks to FLIR Systems design team in Sweden who supported me as a collaboration partner throughout the project. A big thank also goes to friends and tutors from Umeå Institute of Design.

Virtual Public Show | Application

Giving a show in front of a lot of people, or doing a work report, is not an easy task for adults. For younger children, this is even more difficult. A small public show or public statement requires a lot of child time and parental encouragement and support to overcome the fear and tension in the child's heart, but it is not very effective. In the future of widespread application of virtual reality, we hope that virtual reality technology can simulate the public occasions of many listeners, allowing children to practice in such an environment, get encouragement from the audience, and establish positive feedback to overcome inner tension.


As students majoring in industrial design, we are honored that our efforts can be recognized. The iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD will no doubt inspire us to keep working harder and think further.

VR Javelin Training | Sports equipment

Javelin is one of the dangerous sports. The accidents happen because athletes are extremely nervous during key games. This product consists of three parts: VR glasses, javelin simulator and smart glove. Athletes can see the complete javelin, large venue and many spectators through VR glasses. This VR training can not only improve the ability of the athletes, but also reduce their tension in the competition so as to reduce the potential danger. This VR system allows novice athletes to train themselves in javelin throwing. The transition from outdoor training to indoor training can greatly reduce the risk to the athletes themselves and others.


I am very honored to win the award. The prize for the competition is very pleasant to me. Thanks to the competition for the recognition of the works. I am very grateful to the teachers for providing me with advice. I will continue to work hard to improve myself and strive to make better works.

AR Card Game of Fire Prevention | AR Educational Game

There is no realistic understanding of the horror of fire. Therefore, many children do not know the seriousness of playing with fire, and also do not care about learning fire prevention knowledge. AR Card Game of Fire Prevention is an educational toy which combines AR equipment and card game for learning the fire prevention. During the game, the players play the role of arsonist and firefighter. They will experience the seriousness of the fire and explore the proper emergency response to put out a fire. Through the game, children can learn the knowledge of fire protection and raise awareness of the fire from entertainment.


It is a great honor to get recognition from iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD. We believe that the value of design is to improve people's lives. To help people get out of trouble is our responsibility and obligation as a design student.
