iF DESIGN AWARD 2021 - New jury process, new benefits

In difficult times, trust counts. Since 1953 the iF label has been a reliable sign of good design, awarded in Germany and renowned worldwide, both by consumers and within the design community.

Designers, manufacturers, architects and interior designers who want their product or project evaluated by internationally recognized design experts have turned to the iF DESIGN AWARD for decades. They do so to prove their company puts design in the focus of its business, and to attract international attention. Winning an iF DESIGN AWARD will help you stand out from the competition, improve your branding and reach new target groups.

Now we have changed the iF DESIGN AWARD 2021 to reflect the increased digital times and make it even more transparent. Here are the most important benefits at a glance:

What is new?

  • New jury process – 50% of entries will qualify for the final jury
  • New criteria system – enables detailed feedback to participants
  • New benefits – scorecards for each entry, jury report for winners, iF WORLD DESIGN INDEX, publication and ranking points for finalists
  • More eco-friendly – 50% fewer shipments means less environmental impact
  • More categories and disciplines – reflect more aspects of global design

FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

1. Registration & Data

How can I register for the iF DESIGN AWARD?

You have to register online. The online preselection is a digital assessment by our jurors.

This information is important for each entry:

  • Basic: Discipline and category, entry name and type of entry
  • Images: 4 up to 7 key images of your product/entry (File size: max. 5 MB, JPG, RGB, Landscape 4:3, max. 15 megapixel)
  • Description: Short description (max. 650 characters in total). No advertising text.
  • Criteria: Short description of each criteria.
  • Addresses: Manufacturer or client (max. 2 addresses) and designer/design studio (max. 5 addresses)
  • Media: PDF and/or link are optional except the following disciplines/categories: A PDF is required for the disciplines 6.0 Service Design and 8.0 User Experience. The categories 3.01 Websites and 3.03 Film / Video require an URL.

Within 14 days after submission of the online registration you will receive the invoice of the registration fee. After receipt of the invoice you can pay via bank transfer or credit card payment.

Do you accept Chinese Characters?

Unfortunately, we can not accept any CHINESE CHARACTERS. Please change all data to English language, otherwise we are not able to process your registration any further.

Are there any special requirements for the submissions?

Entries must be less than two years old at the date of registration or must be launched, published or realized in the award year. Future-oriented, professional concepts and studies whose implementation is not planned or expected can be entered in discipline Professional Concept.

I am a student, can I participate in the iF DESIGN AWARD?

The iF DESIGN AWARD is open for professionals only. Student concepts are not eligible. As student you can participate in the iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD. The participation is free of charge.

How can I cancel my entry?

Please send us an email with your entry-ID. We will cancel the entry for you.

According to our terms you can cancel within 14 days after submission of your online registration for free. Please see also our terms, point 3: https://ifworlddesignguide.com/terms . After this date we will charge 100% of the registration fee as cancellation fee.

Important: If you are a finalist (your entry has passed the online preselection successfully) and your entry will be judged in the final jury, the entry can not be cancelled anymore.

How can I change the data of an entry before the jury?

You can change or edit all data of the online registration from until the final registration deadline. After that date you can not change the data yourself anymore, but you can request the change via email award@ifdesign.de.

Can I submit a series of products as a single entry?

A product series can be registered as one entry. All elements of the series must be available to the jury. At least one element must be submitted as an original product; further elements can be submitted in print format (brochure or charts/boards) or on request with digital media. In addition, please enter the following information in the online registration form:

  • Basic: Click the field 'Type of entry': Series of …
  • Images: Upload images that show all elements of the series
  • Description: Specify that your entry is a product series
  • Logistics: Click the field 'This entry represents a product family or series' and enter the number of elements that will be presented to the jury

Please keep in mind, that the weaker/weakest part of a series might decide, if the series will be awarded. So the series should have a very consistent design quality. If this is not the case it might be better to submit individual elements of the series as single entries.

If you register a series and one or more individual elements of the series as single entries, you do not have to ship an extra product for the individual entry, since you will need to send the product as part of the series anyway.

Do I only have to submit originals or are prototypes sufficient for the final jury?

You can also submit prototypes or digital media presentations (PDF and/or video link).

Experience with the judges has shown that the closer your entry is to the final product, the better are your chances. Therefore a non-working model usually has fewer chances to win than a working prototype. The final product is always the best.

Can I register a product which participated or won in another award?

Yes you can! Please feel free to register the product for the iF DESIGN AWARD.

How long will my entry stay confidential? When will it be published?

All registrations will be treated confidential. The online preselection and the jury session itself are not open to the public. All jury members are requested to treat the entries confidential. After the online preselection all finalists will be published in an own collection on the iF WORLD DESIGN GUIDE until the result of the final jury. If you do not want to be part of it, please send an email to award@ifdesign.de. After the jury session, we will publish all award winners. Non-winning entries will not be published at all. If you want an awarded entry not to be published, please send us an email and we will find a solution – award@ifdesign.de

How to write a good entry description?

The number of characters is limited to 650 characters including spaces and punctuation marks. Therefore concentrate on the main innovation. What makes your entry special and different (to the competitors)? What makes it relevant? Do not write anything about the quality of the design (as this is up to the jury to decide). Keep in mind that the entry will be there (either virtual or physically) for the jury to judge, so do not say anything that the jury can see already by looking at the entry. Tell them something they cannot see (technical features, patents, production methods, innovative construction). Usually it does not help to write anything on the design process (inspiration, thoughts, method). This of course depends on the entry, but either these things are transported without words, or are not relevant for the decision of the jury.

I would like to register for a company (or even several companies) as an agent. How should I do the registrations?

You should create one “my iF” account for each client. To explain why and how exactly you should do it, we would like to give you a little bit more background: For each registration there are different roles/addresses:

  • participant
  • client/manufacturer
  • designer (can be more than one address)
  • invoice recipient

In general all roles/addresses can but do not have to be different. All roles/addresses consist of a postal address as well as a contact person (phone, email). All the communication concerning the award is done with the participant mostly via email. The invoice is sent via email to the contact person of the invoice recipient. The legal contract is between iF and the participant.

How can I change or edit the data for an entry?

You can edit and change the text and image data of your entry in your my iF user account until the final registration deadline. All data fields you can edit are white. The ones you cannot edit are grey. If you need to change data of a grey field, please contact iF to do it for you.

After the final registration deadline you can not change the data yourself anymore, but you can request the change via email award@ifdesign.de.

2. Fees

How can I pay the award fees?

You will receive the invoice for the registration fee within two weeks after submission of your online registration via email. In addition you can download it in your my iF user account at section INVOICES. After the receipt of the invoice you can pay via bank transfer or credit card payment. Important: Please use the invoice number and customer number as payment reference. Both numbers will be stated on the invoice.

The bank information is shown on the invoice.

Check out your benefits: https://ifworlddesignguide.com/our-awards/professional-awards/if-design-award-2021#benefits-for-winners

How can I change the invoice data?

You can pay in a different currency than Euro per bank transfer or per credit card. Once you have received the invoice you will find a link to my iF for the credit card payment. When paying, just convert the amount on the invoice into your currency with the course on the day of payment.

3. New Jury Process

Why is an online preselection the first step now?

The award should be more eco-friendly: so the carbon footprint of the iF DESIGN AWARD will be reduced by up to 50%, because only 50% of the entries will have to be shipped to Germany.

Is the online preselection a digital process?

Yes, independent international experts will use our new digital jury tool to select the best 50% of all entries as finalists for the jury. Finalists will be published and will receive five ranking points.

Is there a new evaluation criteria system?

Our newly developed criteria system with scores for five main criteria with additional sub-criteria and a resulting total score will enable a more objective and consistent judging. Entries are more comparable now - even across different disciplines.

What is a scorecard?

A new developed scorecard with five main criteria and additional sub-criteria is the basis to score each entry. Scores will be used to choose the finalists and will be passed on to the participants.

Can I take part in the Final Jury?

Entries that pass the online preselection successfully are part of the final jury. Only those companies have to ship their products. If so, you will be informed with the result of the online preselection.

4. After the award: Certificates & Co.

What is the difference between an iF award and an iF gold award?

In general you can say, that all entries have been extensively reviewed by independent experts. All entries which are very well done and which are fulfilling the evaluation criteria win an iF award.

The iF gold awards are very limited and the most outstanding entries out of all awarded entries. This is the highest level and they are pointing the way of the newest design trends.

Rebranding (new brand name) for our iF awarded product: Can we still use the iF winners logo?

In order to be entitled to carry the iF winners logo, the product itself cannot be changed in any way in one or more of the following aspects:

  • Shape, Dimensions, Proportion
  • Function
  • Color, Decor
  • Material

Please contact the award team at award@ifdesign.de and we will add the new brand name within your presentation.

How can I change the data of an entry after the award ceremony?

You can not change the data yourself anymore. iF will do it for you. Please send an email with the updated data to award@ifdesign.de.

Can I order more certificates and trophies after the award ceremony?

You can order additional display certificates (21 cm x 21 cm aluminum brushed display) and iF gold award trophies (for iF gold award winners only) by charge. Paper certificates can not be ordered, but you can download a printable PDF file in your my iF entry overview. Orders are possible by advance payment only. Production and shipping time may take up to 4 weeks in total. You will find the order form in your my iF user account, section BENEFITS.

I did not win an award, can I know the reason?

Each entry will be judged according to a scorecard and you as a participant will be given insight into the jury’s judgement.

Can I visit the iF design award night, without being awarded?

Yes. All participants get an invitation. However, be quick: The seats are strictly limited and you have to register early. You also have to pay the ticket price contrary to those who have been honored. Read all about the award night here: https://ifworlddesignguide.com/our-awards/professional-awards/if-design-award-2021
