Discipline: Communication

Powerscout is an online computer game based around the theme of wasted electricity. The German Energy Agency (dena) aimed the game at the 10-16 age group as a way of communicating particular issues to them in an applicable fashion.
The objective of the game is to save power by switching off electrical appliances. The backdrop to this otherwise banal task involves a hip-hop-inspired look and feel.
The urban cool of the characters is reflected in their language, while the graphics are heavily influenced by the manga comic style. The protagonist is a boy who can’t wait to finally go and play football with his friends.
The combination of an amusing storyline with hip graphics and the distinctive characters of the figures provide scope for identification among young people, thus boosting the game’s appeal within the target group.
