To popularize chess among children, re-designing the chessmen is necessary. Traditional chessmen are too exquisite and heavy for children. In this design, wood is used in chessmen and plastic for chessboard. To further inspire children’s interest, the chessmen are designed to be also toys all by themselves. The chessman is designed to be divided into two parts: the head and the base. The bases are all the same while the heads are for recognition. To stress the importance of King and Queen, the first letter is carved on their heads. The head and the base are joined by a spring, which makes the head swing and looks funny when touched.
